Hypnotherapy is one of the most misunderstood tools in psychological practice. It is not stage hypnosis. You do not lose control. You do not bark like a dog. Here is what it actually is — and when it works.
The real definition
Clinical hypnotherapy involves guiding a person into a state of focused relaxation — often called a trance — in which the critical, analytical part of the mind becomes less dominant, and the subconscious becomes more accessible. This state is not unconsciousness. Most people feel aware throughout, though deeply relaxed.
What happens in the subconscious?
Many of our patterns — fears, emotional reactions, habits, limiting beliefs — are subconscious. Conscious talk therapy can identify and challenge these patterns, but hypnotherapy can work with them more directly. Think of it as the difference between reading a manual on how to ride a bicycle, versus getting on the bicycle.
What hypnotherapy is good for
- Phobias (heights, flying, needles, social situations)
- Chronic insomnia and sleep disorders
- Habit patterns (nail-biting, over-eating, smoking)
- Performance anxiety
- Deeply entrenched fears and emotional blocks
- Processing trauma with a lighter touch
Is it safe?
When conducted by a trained clinical professional, yes. Aswin is a Certified Hypnotist & Mesmerist with formal training in clinical hypnotherapy. He uses hypnotherapy only where clinically appropriate, always with full client consent and awareness, and always within a broader therapeutic framework. It is never used in isolation.
"Hypnotherapy doesn't bypass your will — it enlists it. You are always in control. The therapist is simply a guide into a state your own mind creates."
